We had a huge turnout for the
Avalanche Training. There were 43 participants in the class. The
rangers had a "classroom" session at Idleglen, going over terminology, & basic
concepts. Then the group rode to the bottom of the Gilsonite meadows (they
go on and on & down and down) where they led the group through using their
avalanche beacons to locate a transmitting beacon. While the group was
busy, one of the rangers buried a couple of additional beacons to give the group
a test. (Each was in a container to protect it from moisture and the
container under a metal sheet to protect it from the probes.) A lesson on
snow pits for reading snow conditions followed the probe test.
The
annual Steak Ride capped off the day. It was cold, so some of the dishes
were semi-frozen. A few were ingeniously insulated in towels and cardboard
and were warm as they hit folks' plates. Of course, they froze before we
could finish eating what was on our plates. But, it was all good food.
That's one thing we can sure do well -- cook good foods.
Let's hope all participants keep practicing with their beacons and probes so they'll be ready if they ever need to dig someone out. And let's hope none of our members need to use what they learned in this training. Stay safe out there!
